Larchmont Charter Schools
Currently operating on three campuses with a total student population of 500 students in grades K-6, Larchmont Charter Schools in Los Angeles California, are dedicated to serving a diverse community of students, representing all levels of socio-economic status, culture, and race. The campuses incorporate flourishing gardens and a sunny outdoor courtyard; a garden lines the schools perimeter, playing field and playground. The Edible Schoolyard gardens integrate the concepts of ecology, infusing the curriculum with real-life applications through gardening, and science experiences. Gardening and cooking staff meet with core faculty members to plan and integrate lessons and cross-curricular concepts. Garden and food related vocabulary, art and history projects are featured in the classrooms and hallways. The centerpiece of the Larchmont School’s program is its cutting edge approach to school lunch. Participation in the lunch program is mandatory and parents often sit down to a family style lunch with ingredients sourced from local farmers’ markets.
