The Chez Panisse Foundation is developing a series of workshops for educators, community leaders, and administrators interested in implementing programs like the Edible Schoolyard. Please check this page regularly for information about these opportunities.
Making Middle School Mathematics Delicious: Mathematics comes alive when children have authentic ways of experiencing it. The kitchen and garden provide one of the richest contexts for learning math. During this day and a half, hands-on workshop, participants will explore core mathematical concepts such as volume, slope, rate, direct variation, area, perimeter and proportional relationships through the context of the kitchen and garden. Each participant will receive a draft copy of Making Mathematics Delicious, which includes a set of 15 middle school lessons. Many of these lessons were developed over the last two years in the Edible Schoolyard, with the collaboration of teachers in Berkeley and beyond. Participants will work through several of these lessons during the workshop. There will also be an optional tour of the Edible Schoolyard.
Date/Time: June 16 and 17, 2008, 3:00pm-5:00pm and 9:00am-4:00pm, respectively.
Cost: $200, which includes light refreshments on day one, and breakfast and lunch on day two. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging.
Location: The Edible Schoolyard, 1781 Rose Street, Berkeley, California.
Faculty: Dr. Ann Shannon will facilitate the seminar. Founded by Ann Shannon in 2002, Ann Shannon & Associates develops mathematics curriculum, assessment, and teacher professional development materials. For many years, Ann has been interested in the teaching and learning of mathematics, and in how context affects this. Because she also has an interest in all things related to food, the opportunity to develop Making Mathematics Delicious for the Chez Panisse Foundation was a treat. Ann has developed assessments for the Balanced Assessment Project, and curriculum and assessments for the New Standards Project.
How to Apply: This workshop is limited to 20 middle school mathematics teachers. The deadline to apply is June 10. Applicants will be accepted until workshop is full. Apply here.
